Family Forest School Club, 11th May 2013, 1-3pm. FULLY BOOKED

Our Forest School Clubs are aimed at nursery, primary and special needs schools, as well as other groups within the community and beyond. The courses are designed to increase the use of North Kelvin Meadow and The Children’s Wood for outdoor learning, and to build a ‘can do’ attitude in people and organisations who would like to get outside more for learning or fun. We aim to make our courses free of charge or as cheap as possible so that everyone in the community can access them.

One of the startling findings from our work with young people in the area is that many local children have not been outside to play this year, or not at all! and they loved it. This mirrors other findings which show that one third of Scottish children say they never play outside. Playing outside in nature is a big issue for our community and we are working hard to make it a normal experience for our community. We also believe that being outside for learning and fun is a great antidote to the current move towards an indoor and materialistic childhood. We aim to encourage more people out and more often and we hope that doing so will support the happiness and well-being of our community.

The Meadow and Wood are situated in an area with high levels of inequality and deprivation and so this space is vital for the future health and well-being of all of the community. The huge benefit is that the space is in walking distance for several local nursery, primary and secondary schools and easily accessible by the community.

Please get in contact if you would like to be involved, or if you would like to donate towards our Forest School Clubs. Many thanks to Joyce McFarlane, Gail Cisman, Susan Byrne and Mike Brady who have led some fabulous outdoor learning experiences. We hope they’ll be back to do more.
